About Our Area - Do I stay in Saugatuck or Douglas?

Quick answer - It doesn't matter.  You can say Saugatuck or you can say Douglas but when you pick up the local Pure Michigan Tourist Magazine it simply says Saugatuck Douglas - together. The towns are united by sharing the same body of water known as the Kalamazoo River that feeds out to Lake Michigan. It takes just a few minutes to cross it, going from Saugatuck to Douglas and back, by riding on the area’s historically famous Saugatuck Chain Ferry. When you visit the area you will find yourselves going back and forth, to both towns, all the time. The towns seem to think of themselves as sisters, as they share the same awesome Kalamazoo River, The Saugatuck Chain Ferry, the amazingly fun on-demand Interurban Public Shuttle Bus and many government buildings like the Library, Police Station etc. On one side of the Kalamazoo River is Saugatuck and on the other side is Douglas. To drive from the cities centers takes 1 minute by car, a few minutes bike ride or a very short walk. You can take a 1-2 song walk from TCH to the Douglas dock in Wade’s Bayou Park and catch the Water Taxi to Saugatuck. Take the Interurban On-Demand Shuttle Bus from TCH's front door to shopping in Saugatuck and back for only 50 cents to a $1 a ride. In the past 5 years Douglas has seen tremendous growth and it has blossomed into its own unique, cool, more mellow vibe. With less traffic, you feel a lot more relaxed yet have all the conveniences of an awesome coffee shop, famous restaurants, bars, grocery store, the water, parks, and more. The towns are committed to being like sister cities and try to do everything to make it easy for people to go back and forth. (written by Madison Christopher 2020)
